Stress Is A Part Of Life

We are all stressed, all living beings- animals, humans, and even plants, but we are all gifted with coping skills to mitigate the effects of Stress on our bodies.

At birth, when newborns come out of their mother’s wombs, the first expectation is to cry. So, as a matter of fact, from day one, we start to experience some type of Stress.

The delivery process is a joyful but stressful moment for both mother and child.

In some sense, Stress is a part of life.

It only becomes problematic when it is not manageable or sometimes becomes dangerous due to an existing medical condition that is not managed at all or mismanaged.

Everybody experiences stress to a certain degree, but the expression of Stress varies from one person to the other.

Unfortunately, it affects every part of the body, including the brain.

Stress can be expressed physically, emotionally, or metabolically.

The most common physical expression of Stress is anger.

The expression of Stress varies from one individual to the other; some yell, some curse, some fight, and some throw tantrums(especially children).

Metabolic expression of Stress can be seen in diseases- disturbance in sleep patterns or abnormal sleep patterns, increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, etc.

Some other expressions of Stress are fear, constant worrying, inability to enjoy anything, inability to relax, lack of concentration, and lack of focus.

Other common physical reactions are body pains, headaches, stomach upsets, and skin rashes.

From a young age, we are trained or adequately equipped with skills to cope with Stress so we do not grow to be disruptive members of society and cause danger to ourselves and others.

Improper technics of coping with Stress from a young age breed individuals that lack the skills to manage life as adults.

As we all know, everyday life is generally stressful.

This is why many young adults and older adults resort to alcohol, cigarettes, and other addictive drugs to cope, and this eventually leads to problems associated with addiction.

There is no prescription you can get for Stress, either from your doctor or over the counter.

ADAPTOGENS

Anybody needing stabilization of any physiological body process and also for the body’s homeostasis to have optimum daily output may need to use adaptogens.

I would recommend that anyone having any Stress, emotional, physical, or metabolic, add an adaptogen to their health care regimen to help combat stress under the guidance of a professional.

These adaptogens will help the body increase resistance to external Stress, primarily biological stressors.

Examples of adaptogenic plants used in traditional medicine and their Mechanism of action.

SIBERIAN GINSENG, Pfaffia Paniculataoror or Hebanthe eriantha(Suma or Brazillian Ginseng), Family- Amaranthaceae. The root is a vital part of this plant.

Active components are phenolics, flavonoids, and triterpene glycosides- Siberian Ginseng is used in traditional medicine as an adaptogen and stimulant. Eleutherosidesthe glycoside in this plant is said to stimulate the immune system. They also have polysaccharides that boost the immune system and low blood sugars in some animal tests. It is said to have chemicals that help function in the brain, hormones, and immune system, but no scientific evidence supports this. It is also said to be helpful in chronic fatigue syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD, peripheral neuropathy, flu, and colds, reducing the effects of a hangover, diabetes, and high cholesterol, and reducing the side effects of cancer chemotherapy. It reduces Stress and anxiety and helps athletic performance.

Tulsi, Holy Basil – Ocimum sanctum Linn. family Lamiaceae Eugenol, ursolic acid, rosmarinic acid, apigenin, luteolin, βi -sitosterol, and carnosic acid. Tulsi increases focus, decreases anxiety and boosts the immune system. Tulsi protects the body by increasing its antioxidant molecules, such as glutathione. It enhances the activity of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and catalase, which protects the cellular organelles and membranes by clearing out free radicals caused by reduced oxygen and toxic agents. It is also known to protect cells and prevent cancers caused by toxic compounds by reducing DNA damage. It is also said to induce apoptosis in precancerous and cancerous cells, thereby limiting cancer progression by reducing their growth.

Tulsi is described in Ayurveda as “The Incomparable One,” “Mother Medicine of Nature,” and “The Queen of Herbs” and is revered as an “elixir of life.” Pattanayak P, Behera P, Das D, Panda SK. Ocimum sanctum Linn.

Because of the nature of these herbs, it is advisable not to self-medicate with them because of the potential of drug-drug interactions and the dangers of toxicity.

Behavioral ways to lessen Stress

Another way to manage Stress is to take time to make yourself a priority, especially when it comes to work-life balance.

Make healthy food choices, get adequate sleep, exercise, low impact exercise is especially advisable- just walking at your own pace and your distance does wonders to help reduce Stress.

Avoid trigger situations. Stay away from social media, people, or concerns you have recognized as triggers. Stay away from watching upsetting news, and disconnect from your electronics.
