My health and wellness journey began..

I started my career with a degree in chemistry. This part of my education set the tone for my life in general. When I see different food and drink labels, I see the ingredients in terms of the number of benzene rings and groups attached to them. My brain quickly categorizes them as organic or inorganic, so when I am reading labels and seeing compounds that fall in the inorganic category, I see them as poison to the body, and I simply keep it moving. Unfortunately, there are an abundance of compounds that I recognize on labels in our grocery stores that are not good for the human body. It is sometimes unbelievable how many of these compounds are permitted as preservatives or additives in what we consume today. 

I loved Chemistry so much, I wanted to be a doctor, so I went ahead and attended medical school and became a medical doctor. Still, I always felt I was not doing enough when patients returned to the clinics. All we do is have folders and folders on the same patient without a prospect of ever fully healing them, especially those with chronic diseases.

Often they come in and are discharged without full recovery or cure, and there is always that prospect of them having to come back. I found it prevalent in cases of diseases like hypertension, diabetes, heart conditions, and autoimmune diseases. To health coach is unfortunately not imbibed directly in medicine. It is just non existent because of time limits on consultations. Also, the medical world is yet to focus on using diet and nutrition and other natural therapies like aromatherapy as tools by themselves for preventing and managing disease conditions as medical education is geared primarily towards the use of pharmaceuticals in the management of diseases. This in part affects patient management to a large extent. Some of these popular diseases can effectively be managed and controlled using the right diet and nutrition. During our medical training, I knew something was missing and had since explored nature and figured out some of the disconnects.

During most medical training, we are taught about our body systems in compartments, for example the digestive system, respiratory system, reproductive, endocrine, etc. But the truth is, our body is one whole framework designed to work as one. That disconnect affects medical treatments and, therefore, prognosis and outcomes.

However, raising two young kids, I knew I had to use a different approach because my sole goal was always to make sure they eat healthy, avoid processed foods, and keep their environment clean.

In Modseden, we use our life experiences to bring together a plan to be your health coach. To show you how you can use nature to your best benefit.

In a culture where we have been conditioned to take medicine when sick, our health coaches approach is mainly to coach you to be proactive and be your own health advocate for yourself and your family without over-reliance on pills.

A combination of the simple things, my desire and passion to learn about food, nutrition, and the interactions between food and drugs, encouraged me to further my education at Cornell University

Prevention is the cure in any health and wellness journey.

My continued education at Cornell broadened my  knowledge of using food as medicine. Extensive personal research combined with my travels, learning from other cultures, learning about their food and their ethnobotany has helped shape my perspective in using food as medicine. When looking to work with a health professional to health coach you, to help steer you in the right direction, make sure to use a health coach with solid track record not only in life experiences but education so you get the optimum and best outcomes.
